This June Wavefarm Productions completed work on a 6 month recording and post-production project with Dublin Jazz band, Nova Collective.

Recorded in Windmill Lane studios, Dublin in February 2013 by Kevin Brennan (Wavefarm Productions) and Gareth Smyth the E.P has been in the pre-production stages (mixing ,mastering, etc) with Wavefarm Productions for the past two months leading up to Nova Collective’s launch gig at the Beteco Brazil wine bar on Ormonde Quay, Dublin on July 5th.

Mixed by Wavefarm’s Kevin Brennan during May/June 2013, Louis Ryan (Nova Collective) and Kev worked tirelessly to mix the studio recordings of tracks ‘Bossa Nova Underground’, ‘In 5′ and’ Talk’, which were tracked live to maintain the performance feel.

Once the final alterations where finished, the mixes were sent onto Wavefarm’s Stephen White for mastering in late June, before being handed the finished masters.

Studio Diary | Matt Martin – Day 1

April was a busy month for Wavefarm Productions, with several sessions taking place at Station Studios in Balbriggan. It was during this time that Matt Martin started recording his debut album.

Matt Martin in studio, recording acoustic guitar

After several months of pre-production with Kevin, Matt came into the studio to lay down the final acoustic guitar tracks for his upcoming release. Although he had several songs to record on the day, the session moved quickly with a relaxed atmosphere, creating enough time for both producer and artist to try out new ideas.

The sessions were captured using an AKG C214 through an Avalon microphone pre-amp and an SE z5600a tube large diaphragm condenser. The stereo pair worked well together, with the AKG providing the bright high-end qualities of the instrument’s strings and the warm low-end of the acoustic being provided by the SE. Multiple steel acoustic guitars were used used, to achieve specific sounds for each individual track.

With all of the albums acoustic guitars recorded, the production will now move on to the piano, vocal and backing track sessions in the coming months. Matt Martin’s debut album will be due for release soon.

Studio Diary | Cassia And Milo

This past month has seen the Wavefarm team traveling to Station Studios in Balbriggan to record Irish-Indie duo Cassia and Milo. The pair have been in production with us on their upcoming debut E.P, due for release this summer.

Cassia recording vocals

The sessions began with the band laying down multiple vocal takes. Including several unplanned backing harmonies ad-libbed by Cassia. Her creativity in the studio set a great tone and mood for the days that followed, with the time spent in pre-production paying off. The vocals were recorded using an SE Z5600a through an Avalon pre-amp.

With the vocals done, it was time for the E.P’s guitar tracks. During this session Milo spent the day in the studio over-dubbing both rhythm and lead acoustic parts, switching between steel and nylon stringed guitars. A stereo pair of condenser microphones were used to capture the takes. With one recording position being influenced by legendary sound engineer Steve Albini’s acoustic guitar set-up, a large diaphragm condenser pointed off axis above the instrument’s sound hole.

After several successful recording sessions, the Wavefarm team have begun the mixing process with plenty of great takes and performances to work with. Look out for Cassia and Milo’s debut E.P this summer.
